If there’s one “royal” hike in Corsica—beyond the GR20—it’s the Capo Rosso hike. At an elevation of over 300 meters, the Genoese tower at Capo Rosso, also known as the Tour de Turghiu, overlooks the Gulf of Porto and the Gulf of Sagone, offering hikers a breathtaking view of the Paglia Orba peaks and one of UNESCO’s protected sites: the Calanques of Piana.

Capo Rosso, a pink granite headland “crowned” by a Genoese tower
“First and foremost, you should know that Capo Rosso is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is accessible only on foot. In my opinion, one of the main highlights of the hike is the unique color of the rock; this pink granite will take your breath away throughout the hike.
At its summit (331 meters above sea level), you’ll find the Genoese tower of Turghiu, built in 1608. From there, you’ll be treated to a magnificent 360° view offering a spectacular panorama of the Gulf of Porto, the Scandola Nature Reserve, the Gulf of Girolata, and Cargèse (among others).”
How do I get to the hiking trail?
“The trailhead for this hike is located a few kilometers from the village of Piana, in the direction of Arone Beach. The trailhead is located about 6 km past the fork in the road, near the dirt plaza, the stone house, and the Coastal Conservation Agency sign.
A large parking lot is available for your car; it’s right next to a refreshment stand where you can get something to drink—especially during hot weather.
This is the route I would recommend, as it is undoubtedly the most popular one. From there, all you have to do is follow the many cairns along the path and make your way to the Turghiu Tower.”
A spectacular hike that’s shaping up nicely
“There will be plenty of highlights along the hike, but if I had to choose just one, it would undoubtedly be the panoramic view from the top of the tower, as well as the view from the window inside the Genoese tower—both of which naturally invite you to capture the moment with your camera.”
If I had to offer some advice:
- Wear a good pair of shoes
- Leave as early as possible in the morning to avoid the heat as much as possible, especially during the summer
- Be sure to bring at least 1.5 L of water!
- Keep young children away
- Don’t forget your camera so you can take home some unforgettable memories
- Bring a snack, since hiking is a great opportunity for a picnic
To make the most of the moment, make sure you’re well-prepared to avoid minor injuries… It would be a real shame to have to turn back.”
