I wrote this guide so that at every stop—a stone, a tower, a village—it can finally tell you its story. I didn’t want to write just another travel guide—the kind that lists sandy beaches, family-friendly activities, and great restaurants, which are always useful but already far too numerous and all too similar.
What I was looking for was understanding. To know why this tower stands there, facing the open sea. Who lived in this ruined village, now overrun by the maquis. What these rows of stones—as old as the pyramids—told of the forgotten times of the “Island of Beauty.”
So I set out on the island’s trails, notebook in hand, armed with dozens of books—from the most renowned to the least well-known. And, site by site, I pieced togetherthe history of Corsica as it’s almost never told.

Is this really a travel guide to Corsica?
Yes, but not in the usual sense of the word. You won’t find any hotel rankings or maps of beaches, as you would in *Le Petit Futé*, *Lonely Planet*, or *Le Routard*. It’s a collection of chronological accounts and historical sites. In Corsica, designed to give meaning to what you see: a guide that transforms a simple visit into an encounter with the island, its past, and those who shaped it. In any case, you’ll discover plenty of places.
Do you need to know about Corsica’s history to enjoy it?
Absolutely not. I begin the book with a clear and concise overview of the major periods in Corsica’s history, so that everyone can get their bearings in time before setting out to explore. Whether you’re an islander with a passion for heritage or a traveler who’s simply curious, you’ll have no trouble following along.
Which historic sites in Corsica are covered in this book?
From the most famous to the least known: citadels, Genoese towers, prehistoric monuments, Romanesque chapels, abandoned villages… More than 90 historic sites in Corsica, spread across the entire island from Cap Corse to the far south, each with the highlights of its history and the stories surrounding it.
