The trusted alternative to Uber on the island

Did you know that Uber has not yet managed to establish itself in Corsica? Yet another unique aspect that sets the “Island of Beauty” apart from other regions: the islanders have managed to maintain their independence from the American giant and competing apps on the European market.

So, of course, if you don’t have your own transportation during your stay on the island, taxi companies are everywhere, just like anywhere else. But there are also several independent ride-hailing companies, generally small operations, some of which are more trustworthy than others.

Let me share my tips on private car services in Corsica and recommend the company I’ve chosen as my partner on the island (at least that’s transparent).

Getting around in Corsica takes longer (and is more complicated) than elsewhere

As they say in Corsica, 10 kilometers in the Taravu take much longer than 10 kilometers on a national highway in the Hauts-de-France region. And there’s no guarantee you’ll find fast, suitable transportation. Don’t forget that Corsica is a “mountain in the sea.”

To summarize the options available to you (if you don’t have your own vehicle) and their limitations:

A rental car is one of the most common ways to get around Corsica, especially if you’re traveling with children. You have the freedom to go wherever you want, but at a prohibitive cost (higher than on the mainland).

Cycling: There are bike paths and a few trails for cyclists of all skill levels, though you’ll have to contend with streets and roads that are poorly maintained or not maintained at all—not to mention the mountainous terrain, which may deter casual cyclists.

Buses, which cover almost the entire island but are operated by different companies and run at varying frequencies depending on the time of year and the region of the island.

The train, whose tracks connect Ajaccio to Bastia via Corte—following a beautiful diagonal route—and Corte to Calvi if you want to travel from Central Corsica to Balagne. It runs year-round, with 2 to 3 departures daily.

Under these circumstances, you may sometimes need flexibility, the ability to travel at unusual hours, and perhaps some comfort. That’s where taxis and ride-hailing services come in.

A shuttle ride to Lake Tolla, near Ajaccio.

Why Uber Isn’t Available in Corsica

The reason is pretty much the same as for other tech services of this kind: on the island, local businesses can often do without platforms or solutions like these. Especially since Corsicans are determined not to let foreign companies eat into their profit margins—can we really blame them?

More than a dozen ride-hailing companies in Corsica

There are many such companies operating on the island, which can sometimes make it difficult to find and choose a driver. Here is a non-exhaustive list of ride-hailing companies located throughout the island:

Driver 2A

Corsica Private Car Service

Corsica VIP Transfer

Corsican Driver

Green Go

Ile Rousse Transfers

JT Transfers

My Driver in Corsica

Southern Corsica Private Car Service

Corsica Prestige Transfers

Which one should you choose? You could, of course, spend an hour or so comparing the routes they cover (some only run between Bastia and Cap Corse, others cover the entire southern part of the island, and still others operate as a network of drivers…) and reading Google reviews, then call to get quotes.

But who wants to waste time without being sure they’re making the best choice?

Which ride-hailing company should you choose in Corsica?

For our team, the choice is easy: we work with Mathieu, a driver from Ajaccio who runs the Corsican ride-hailing service “Corse VTC” and also coordinates ride requests throughout Corsica, with a network of a few reliable and responsive drivers.

The company operates with three vehicles of its own: a van (Volkswagen Caravelle, seating 8 passengers and holding 8 suitcases) and an SUV that can accommodate up to 4 passengers and 4 pieces of luggage. With a 5/5 rating based on nearly 200 customer reviews, his satisfaction score is the highest on the Isle of Beauty.

You can see why they’re our local partner.

Our private-hire partner travels throughout Corsica for its clients.

What types of rides and trips are covered by our partner ride-hailing service?

Let’s keep it simple: Mathieu can take you anywhere on the island, whether in his own vehicles or those of his partner private-hire drivers. Here are the trips that are most often booked during the season:

Transfers to (or from) an airport such as Bastia, Ajaccio, or Figari. The base price is €25 and increases depending on the distance traveled.

City-to-city transfers, such as Ajaccio to Bonifacio or Bastia to Calvi, for example. It’s impossible to provide an estimate because the distances vary so much.

Available for half-day or full-day excursions. The price starts at 400€ and goes up to 700€ for a full day; in this case, there is an additional 20€ charge for the driver’s meal.

The rates listed apply to daytime trips. As you can imagine, the cost increases by about 20% after 8:00 p.m., on Sundays, and on holidays.

Are ride-hailing services cheaper than taxis in Corsica?

Let’s just say it right off the bat: Corsican ride-hailing drivers set their own rates, without being bound by the pricing structures imposed by platforms like Uber and LeCab. This allows them to make a better living, but travelers should expect higher fares… And they don’t always have a choice.

Why, you might ask? Because the distances can sometimes be long, on roads that are more winding and shaped by the terrain. Because the local cost of living is also higher than in other areas—it is an island, after all. And also because drivers are under less pressure to keep fares low than Uber drivers and similar services, as I mentioned.

Of course, the cost of getting around will sometimes seem exorbitant to some tourists and visitors passing through Corsica. But if you consider that there aren’t many flexible alternatives on the island—aside from buses, car rentals (which are very expensive; this isn’t just hearsay), and trains that only serve two main routes… …you’ll better understand the pricing and why it isn’t negotiable.

In any case, a ride-hailing service will often be a little cheaper than a taxi. Not to generalize, of course.

How do ride-hailing drivers differ from taxi drivers?

There is no definitive answer to this question, since it can vary depending on the law and the jurisdiction. But if we have to point out some differences, here are a few:

Ride-hailing services must be booked in advance by phone, through an app, or online, while taxis can be hailed on the street or booked in advance.

Ride-hailing services often offer fixed rates or flat fees for trips, while taxis typically use a meter that calculates the fare based on time and distance, causing the price to fluctuate.

Ride-hailing services often use high-end, comfortable vehicles, while taxis can vary in size and quality.

Taxis generally have specific geographic areas where they can operate, while ride-hailing services can operate in a wider area. This is somewhat less true in Corsica.

Finally, private-hire drivers must complete specific training to obtain a license, while taxi drivers are subject to stricter training requirements and must pass an exam. So, let’s admit it—the requirements are more stringent for taxis.

Do rates vary depending on the season?

Well, no. Not really, with a few exceptions. The grocery prices I mentioned earlier in the article are Mathieu’s.

However, keep in mind that many ride-hailing services only operate part of the year: generally between April and mid-November. They align their schedules with tourist season, from Easter through the period following All Saints’ Day. In the winter, you can rely on traditional taxis, which are always available.

When and how should you book a private car with a driver in Corsica?

I asked Mathieu directly, and here’s what he told me: “You can tell your readers that it’s ‘the sooner, the better’—ideally a few weeks before peak-season stays—because our tour schedule fills up quickly. But we can also work out last-minute solutions when we have availability and when we sense that the people contacting us are in a bit of a bind… In any case, you’ll first need to request a quote and confirm a pickup and drop-off time slot by contacting us.”

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments—I’ll do my best to answer them.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-6642","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-non-classe","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap

https://i0.wp.com/www.lettera.corsica/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_4985-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1920&ssl=1
["GET
