The small village of Tralonca is nestled in the mountainous micro-region of Boziu, near Corte, the historic capital of Corsica. Its beautiful houses still bear witness to a bygone era, with some stone structures dating back several centuries. <\/p>\n\n

Micalona’s Genoese Tower<\/em>: A Piece of History<\/h2>\n\n

The Genoese towers, built during an era of conquest and colonization, were used by the Republic of Genoa to protect its strongholds in Corsica against invasions and Barbary attacks. These towers were built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Today, only about 70 remain standing\u2014a testament to a rich chapter in Corsica\u2019s past that has endured centuries of conflict. <\/p>\n\n

The Genoese tower of Micalona<\/em><\/a>, located in Olmeto, in Southern Corsica, is one of the many watchtowers built by the Republic of Genoa along the coast. Built to protect the port from piracy and other threats from the sea, it stands today as a proud reminder of Corsican history and culture. <\/p>\n\n

Purchased by a lover of historic buildings, it was restored in keeping with traditional methods and converted into a vacation rental. The guardroom has been transformed into a living room, the terrace into a sun deck, and the retaining rock\u2014which was hollowed out\u2014now houses a bathroom and a small bedroom. The tower has three bedrooms. A swimming pool carved into the rock, with a superb view of the sea and the mouth of the Taravo River, completes this exceptional property. <\/p>\n\n

Saparale Hamlet<\/em>: Luxury Sheep Pens<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Sart\u00e8ne, Ortolo Valley<\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s now head south of Sart\u00e8ne, within easy reach of major prehistoric sites, \u201cthe most Corsican of Corsican towns,\u201d and numerous places that symbolize the island\u2019s pastoral way of life.<\/p>\n\n

Founded around 1860, the Domaine Saparale<\/em><\/a> was taken over in the 1990s and has since become one of the most renowned wineries on the \u201cIsland of Beauty.\u201d Spanning more than 1,000 hectares, visitors are immersed in a true haven of peace, far from the bustling coastline and surrounded by authentic treasures of Corsican heritage: a vineyard, olive groves, a former 19th-century gendarmerie building, and restored \u201ccasedde\u201d\u2026 <\/p>\n\n

In the heart of the hamlet, three superb sheepfolds (Caseddu<\/em>, Scola, and <\/em> Mulinu<\/em>) are open year-round for short stays (2 nights) or longer\u2026 Ideal for an exceptional getaway, provided you have a budget of at least \u20ac550 for 2 nights during the off-season. Rentals are by the week only in the summer, but are more flexible the rest of the year. All the more reason to explore the region once the crowds have left\u2026 <\/p>\n\n

Fianca Paradisu<\/em>: Nights Under the Stars<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re-Campomoro, Valinco Gulf<\/p>\n\n

Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re Campomoro\u2014perhaps that name rings a bell\u2026 It surely brings to mind the Genoese tower, the largest of its kind in Corsica. This stretch of the island\u2019s coastline is home to a rather unexpected type of lodging: Fianca Losso<\/em><\/a> and its open-air rooms, nestled right in the heart of the maquis, with nothing but\u2026 the starry sky as their roof. And a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean horizon. <\/p>\n\n

The guesthouse is located in the heart of a protected area, nestled among beaches, scrubland, coves, and mountains. It\u2019s an ideal base for exploring Southern Corsica, from exceptional beaches to the most beautiful hiking trails inland\u2014such as the coastal trail that leads to the Senetosa lighthouse. <\/p>\n\n

In addition to the standard rooms, the most affordable unique lodging option is a bed under the stars, surrounded by nature. The hosts also offer \u201cFianca Paradisu,\u201d the more remote of the two outdoor beds. Expect to pay between \u20ac200 and \u20ac260 per night, with a minimum stay of two nights. <\/p>\n\n

Senetosa Lighthouse<\/em>, at the End of the World<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Tizzano, Gulf of Valinco<\/p>\n\n

Take a map of Corsica and head southwest along the majestic coastline of the Sartenais-Valinco micro-region. To get \u201cclose\u201d (so to speak) to the lighthouse, it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours by car from Ajaccio, or 1 hour and 15 minutes coming up from Bonifacio. We\u2019re only about 20 minutes from Sart\u00e8ne, the town that M\u00e9rim\u00e9e dubbed \u201cthe most Corsican of Corsican towns.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

But simply pinpointing the \u201cFanali di Senetosa\u201d isn\u2019t enough. The site as a whole encompasses a protected stretch of coastline that extends from the Genoese tower at Campomoro (further north, toward Propriano) to the lighthouse\u2014located further down\u2014and continues\u2014for the most seasoned hikers\u2014all the way to the port village of Tizzano. <\/p>\n\n

\"Senetosa

Contrary to what some articles might suggest, the Senetosa Lighthouse<\/a><\/em>\u2014often described as \u201cunique lodging\u201d\u2014is neither a hotel nor a bed-and-breakfast. It\u2019s a mountain hut, just like the huts along the GR20\u2026 With a few exceptions: guests can stay for a maximum of two nights, and reservations are primarily made online through the official website to ensure more reliable management of accommodations (so be sure to book your stay in advance). <\/p>\n\n

During the off-season, between November and February, only groups of at least 10 people are accepted\u2014and only with advance reservations.<\/p>\n\n

In Pignata<\/em>: Treehouses and Charming Rooms<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Levie, Alta-Rocca<\/p>\n\n

The Alta-Rocca region in Southern Corsica is one of the island\u2019s most rugged areas. Majestic mountain peaks, lush forests\u2026 Visitors who love nature and are looking to unwind are drawn to its incredible beauty and well-preserved culture. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as hiking, donkey rides, tree-top adventure courses, canyoning, and mountain biking… <\/p>\n\n

This is the countryside around Sart\u00e8ne. Far from the hustle and bustle of overly touristy towns, the guesthouse A Pignata<\/em><\/a>, in the town of Levie, consists of 17 rooms spread across three buildings, \u201ccreating the atmosphere of a small hamlet around the main square,\u201d according to the owners. But you might be more drawn to the two treehouses, perched like cocoons among the branches and birds. <\/p>\n\n

You’ll enjoy breathtaking views while surrounded by nature and tranquility. Beautiful hikes await you on the many nearby trails. <\/p>\n\n

Zonza Yurts and Lodges<\/em>: A Private Retreat in the Mountains<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Zonza, Alta-Rocca<\/p>\n\n

Still perched on the heights of Alta-Rocca, at the foot of the magnificent “Aiguilles” of Bavella, the village of Zonza evokes many images. From breathtaking views of its rugged mountains to activities like camping and hiking (the final\u2014or first\u2014leg of your GR20 adventure, for example), Zonza has something to offer every adventure seeker. <\/p>\n\n

Staying in Zonza\u2014but with a twist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

A farm inn, Le Pr\u00e9 aux Biches<\/em><\/a> stands out from the rest thanks to its eco-friendly and unique lodging options: 8 yurts and a teepee in a 4-hectare wooded park, as well as 9 \u201csafari\u201d-style tents on a 70-hectare estate along the Rizzanese River. \u201cThese tents are scattered throughout lush vegetation to ensure everyone\u2019s privacy,\u201d in the shade of the trees. <\/p>\n\n

You’re sure to come across a few animals there, including the three llamas that live on this peaceful estate.<\/p>\n\n

Cocoon Village<\/em>, nestled in a patch of scrubland<\/h2>\n\n

Where?<\/strong> Lake Ospedale, Porto-Vecchio<\/p>\n\n

I’ll wrap up this tour of Corsica’s unique accommodations with the Cocoon Village<\/em><\/a> in Porto-Vecchio, on the island\u2019s southeastern coast. More specifically, we need to head toward Lake Ospedale, whose shores are surrounded by the trees of the forest of the same name. <\/p>\n\n

This \u201cvillage\u201d is unlike any other hotel. Rather than a traditional resort, it offers visitors the chance to stay in whimsically designed \u201ccocoons,\u201d nestled among the trees and on the side of a cliff, in complete seclusion. The pods are made of wood, linen, and durable cotton, with large windows offering views of the surrounding nature. Every pod is equipped with all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. <\/p>\n\n

But be aware: even though this once again resembles \u201cglamping\u201d (glamorous camping), special attention has been paid to sustainability; it remains basic and energy-efficient. An excellent choice for your next sustainable trip to Corsica, even if the price might dampen your enthusiasm: between \u20ac250 and \u20ac380 per night. <\/p>\n\n

I will, of course, be able to expand this selection in the future.
