Emerging from the heart of the Mediterranean, Corsica exerts a magnetic pull on travelers. From the air, the gaze is lost in its marvelous gulfs and snow-capped, jagged mountains, while from the mainland, the senses are enlivened by its mysterious maquis, fragrant with thyme, lavender, and wild mint. On long summer days heated by the blazing sun, its emerald-colored rivers offer a welcome coolness. <\/p>\n\n

It is to the north of this enchanting island\u2014specifically in Balagne\u2014that my journey takes you in this article. There, traditional crafts come to life from hamlet to village. <\/p>\n\n

Balagne: A Mediterranean Micro-Region Caught Between Grandeur and Change<\/h2>\n\n

Balagne, a microregion in the northwest of the island, embodies the very essence of Corsica: a rural landscape nestled between the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. Administered first by the Romans, then by the Pisans and the Genoese, the region opens onto the Mediterranean basin and has enjoyed prosperous development. Wine, olive oil, and grains are produced here and traded. <\/p>\n\n

Local lords, or\u201csgi\u00f2<\/em>,\u201d played an important political and economic role, while the Church held a preeminent place in the daily lives of the citizens. The micro-region would even come to be known as \u201cSainte Balagne\u201d due to the rapid increase in the number of places of worship during the Pisan period. This state of affairs would persist until the final decades of the 19th century, which marked the height of traditional Corsican society. <\/p>\n\n

However, with the outbreak of World War I, the Corsicans would pay a heavy price, leading to the collapse of this society. This was exacerbated by the profound changes taking place in the world, which drove residents into exile on the mainland or to major cities such as Ajaccio and Bastia. <\/p>\n\n

Although Balagne is now a region heavily influenced by summer tourism, a core group of residents has remained and continues to practice the traditional ways that have been passed down from generation to generation.<\/p>\n\n

A craft association to “explore” along Corsica’s roads<\/h2>\n\n

In 1993, the Haute-Corse Chamber of Trades invited all artisans and producers to a meeting that would lead to the founding of the association La Strada di l\u2019Artigiani<\/em>. The goal was to introduce the general public to the traditional skills practiced in the villages of Balagne by artisans in the arts and culinary fields, as well as by agricultural producers. <\/p>\n\n

The following year, a themed route bearing the same name as the organization was created; in French, it is called \u201cLa route des savoir-faire de Balagne.\u201d The association now has 49 members spread across all of the municipalities in the Balagne region. <\/p>\n\n

In this regard, it has a website where you can access an interactive map showing the locations of the artisans. The route, with its very distinctive charm, winds along small roads beneath the watchful eye of Monte Grosso (1,935 meters), offering superb views of the coastline. It guides visitors from village to village through a landscape of sparse vegetation where the red-tailed hawk\u2014a very common bird of prey in the area\u2014is never far away. <\/p>\n\n

The tour offers a chance to explore the workshops of these women and men who have chosen to express their creative vision through their hands. The diversity of the items they craft and the abundance of agricultural produce\u2014all within a relatively small area\u2014make the Artisans\u2019 Trail a remarkable destination on the Isle of Beauty. <\/p>\n\n

Cutlery, Ceramics, Olive Growing, Winemaking… All these crafts can be found here <\/h2>\n\n

Among the many crafts found here, Corsican cutlery is well represented. In Calvi, Gilles Garcia will welcome you to his workshop, A Funderia<\/em>, an antique-inspired bronze foundry. <\/p>\n\n

Still based in the city of Christopher Columbus, Pol Demongeot creates original artistic cutlery and crafts one-of-a-kind pieces. He works with a coal-fired forge known as the \u201cJapanese\u201d style and has mastered a wide variety of steels. Like others before him, he joined the Center for Ethnographic Research in Metallurgy (CERM) in Lumio to develop his skills and contribute his knowledge. <\/p>\n\n

Since ancient times, the Mediterranean has been a region where viticulture has been practiced. Corsica, like the Balagne region, is no exception. Owned by the Acquaviva family for three generations, the Alzipratu<\/em> estate spans more than forty hectares between the towns of Zilia, Moncale, and Calenzana. Located at the foot of the Monte Cintu massif and just a few minutes from the coast, the vineyards benefit from a climate shaped by the contrasting influences of the sea and the mountains. <\/p>\n\n

At Alzipratu<\/em>, all of the island\u2019s major grape varieties are planted, allowing the winemaker to produce a variety of distinct wines. As for the reds, the Iniziu comes from the oldest Niellucciu vineyards, while the Suale is produced from a Sciaccarellu vineyard where sheep graze every winter. The Fiuri, meanwhile, is a blend of Minustellu and Aleaticu. Aged in oak and acacia barrels, the Lume cuv\u00e9e is made with Vermentinu and delivers a rich and complex white wine. <\/p>\n\n

Perched at an altitude of 260 meters, Pigna is a place of absolute tranquility and a must-see destination. The village, with its pale-colored houses and azure shutters, is home to a large community of artisans and musicians. <\/p>\n\n

With the goal of reviving forgotten instruments, such as the Cetera (an iconic Corsican cittern), Ugo Casalonga founded the luthier\u2019s workshop A Casa Liutaiu<\/em>. For more than thirty-five years, he has been designing and crafting stringed instruments, each one a unique piece. From the vihuela to the harpsichord and the lute, this artisan, with his refined craftsmanship, has collaborated with a wide range of musicians. <\/p>\n\n

In the narrow streets of Pigna, just past an intersection, lies the workshop A Ceramica di Pigna<\/em>. Located in the hills above the village, Cyril Quilichini uses various techniques\u2014including wheel-throwing, stamping, and casting\u2014to create earthenware, stoneware, masks, and glazed tiles. For the past twenty-five years, together with his father, he has been rediscovering traditional decorative techniques, as well as certain shapes and colors from the Mediterranean region. <\/p>\n\n

For foodies and lovers of fine dining, Pigna is full of great spots where you can enjoy the sunset while snacking on a bite to eat (A Moresca,<\/em> A Casarella<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n

The Artisans\u2019 Trail also features olive growers. Isabelle Tommasini, based in Avapessa, offers tastings and the opportunity to purchase Corsican PDO olive oil directly from her estate. <\/p>\n\n

Similarly, David and Dominique Bichon invite those curious about the Reginu Valley to discover two extra-virgin olive oils made from different olive varieties. Sabina is the main variety in the Balanine region and is characterized by a slight heat with green pepper notes on the finish, specific to the winter harvest. For its part, the Germanghja has a vegetal fruitiness with notes of fresh green herbs and chili pepper. A certain strength within its mildness makes it suitable for use in both hot and cold dishes. <\/p>\n\n

While a number of trades and specialties have been mentioned, we could also include glassblowers, soap makers, confectioners, jewelers, cookie makers, basket weavers, and leatherworkers.<\/p>\n\n

Balagne is a region rich in lush nature, postcard-perfect landscapes, artisans, and local producers. Without them, it would be stripped of the soul that brings it to life. Here, perhaps more than anywhere else, the spirit of the locals is just as fertile as the land on which they live.
